ABOUT THE Session

Delivering bad news is never fun or easy.  But it does go with the territory of being part of a team or organization.  Eventually, you’re going to have to do it.

But how do you do it without losing sleep the night (or weeks) before?  And how do you walk the tightrope of finding the words that will convey the cold, hard truth without causing unnecessary harm or alarm?

The good news is that there are tried-and-true techniques that can make bad news easier for you to deliver -- and easier for your colleagues to hear.

This class will show you how.

You’ll leave this session armed with a powerful 5-step formula you can use the next time you have to share bad news with a colleague, manager, business partner, employee or anyone else in your life.

what you’ll learn

  • A five-step formula for delivering bad news;

  • The best time in a conversation to deliver bad news;

  • The importance of explaining “why” a particular decision was made;

  • How to craft and deliver an appropriate “expression of empathy” (the wrong kind will backfire);

  • How to identify and articulate an upside that isn’t just “lip service”;

  • How to re-frame bad news;

  • Why you need to clearly spell out next steps.

OPTIONAL LEARNING LAB WORKSHOP AVAILABLE

Looking to offer participants a hands-on experience after they take this class? Our Learning Lab add-on class may be just the thing.  Learning Labs give participants a chance to bring in their own content and practice key skills for instructor feedback.  So that we can offer a personalized experience, we limit the number of attendees who can join each Learning Lab. Each participant will be asked to complete some light “pre-work” beforehand so they come to the session warmed up and ready to go.

Like all of your lunch and learns, it disrupted my thinking in a positive way.”
The model was clear and effective and I found the practical examples of how it might be applied to real life scenarios very useful and relevant to our business. I also love the short format.”
